Get it right this Valentine’s day: Flower and gift guide

Posted on February 12th, 2011 by Alice Daveis

The services of online florists have made it increasingly easy to send flowers at any time of year and during February many people’s minds will be on red roses as a romantic Valentine’s Day gift. Flowers make wonderful presents to celebrate other occasions but deciding which flowers to send can be tricky.

When someone you know is celebrating an engagement, a new baby, a birthday or an anniversary, the first thought that springs to mind might be to send flowers. By learning a little bit about the history and cultural connotations of various flowers, we can make sure we send the right flowers for every occasion.

Amongst the flowers uk residents tend to favour for its simplicity is the lily. Just as commonly sent in condolence as they are to say ‘thank you’, lilies represent purity and peace.

Many of our favourite flowers appear in spring, giving us a huge range of choice when it comes to buying flowers as gifts for Easter, Mother’s Day and spring birthdays. Daffodils are abundant in spring and can be picked at the roadside to make an ideal gift for spring babies, as they are seen to represent new life.

Flowers are not the first gift that springs to mind when we are doing our Christmas shopping. But a number of plants and flowers are steeped in Christmas tradition and those who do send flowers at Christmas are guaranteed to please with their present buying. Evergreen plants like holly and pine can make great Christmas trimmings when given as a gift with red berries, while the ultimate Christmas flower is of course mistletoe.

Tulips make wonderful presents all year round. Elegant, shapely and brightly coloured, tulips are amongst the flowers uk residents have warmed to most over the years, making these Persian beauties an integral part of Easter celebrations and a central feature of many British gardens. The tulip can be given at birthdays or special occasions as a symbol of love, without the romantic connotations of the red rose.

Men enjoy receiving flowers just as much as women and there are a number of bold, masculine flowers to choose from when seeking the perfect floral gift for the man in your life. Flowers such as larger-than-life Gerbera daisies and Stargazer lilies are seen to symbolise honour and aspiration and are likely to bowl men over with their bright colours and striking blooms.

Your local florist may be able to source rare, seasonal flowers for a particular special occasion and many online florists can do the same. But it is worth noting also that the decision to send flowers is an entirely personal one and, whichever flower you choose to send, the sentiment is really up to you.

If you need a flower delivery London has some great flower shops providing all sorts of flower bouquets gifts for any occasion including weddings, birthdays, anniversary gifts and funeral flowers.
